Immediately after its release, the film Emmanuelle gave a powerful shake to all the existing taboos, it rampantly disarmed the censors and the critics, became a gigantic hit, and turned into an instant classic and a ground-breaking film of soft-core pornography. The whole thing was based on a novel, which was once forbidden by the French president De Gaulle himself. Americans could hardly wait for the distribution to begin, and the film marked the beginning of a new era in film history, which was being made by the then 23 year-old Dutch woman Sylvia Kristel.

The story of Emmanuelle is a story of a young model, who arrives to Bangkok to visit her husband Jean and who gets involved in numerous affairs with other women, has intercourse with two different men already during the flight over, and becomes a slave to an older gentleman who willingly offers her to prepotent Asian studs. In 1974, this storyline captured men’s imagination and the essence of the genre which was introduced two years earlier by Last Tango in Paris. But beware of the shortened and trimmed American version, which removed the juiciest 15 minutes of the original.

 

Emmanuelle is still one of France's most successful films.
